about

'the night is dark, the night is silent, the night is bright, the night is loud' is a captivating exploration of experimental music, drawing from styles as diverse as neo-classical, ambient, drone, noise, breakbeat and post-rock.

Cellist Peter Hollo is no stranger to experimentation. When not playing with the genre-defying Tangents or the almost impossibly eclectic FourPlay String Quartet, Peter has performed alongside a long list of Australian luminaries, including Sophie Hutchings, Oren Ambarchi, Lisa Gerrard (Dead Can Dance), Seekae and Paul Mac.

Across the sixty minutes of 'the night is dark...', Peter - armed with a cello, piano, laptop and Line 6 DL-4 loop pedal - roams expansive sonic territory.

From the soaring elation of lockstep - with its looped and ever-building layers of cello - to the swampy drone of infestation; from the menacing piano & synth soundscapes of descent, to the delicate, neo-classical string lines of refuge, each track from the night is dark feels like its own self-contained universe: a moment of pure creativity frozen in ether.

It’s the result of a conscious focus on expansion; of drawing in a broad enough palette of influences that the raw components become inseparable from the end-product.

The album at times calls to mind the work of fellow cellists Julia Kent and Arthur Russell - if they were mashed with the electroacoustic explorations of early Four Tet and Squarepusher, the gorgeous textural detail of Tortoise, and with the menace of Justin Broderick and The Body lurking about the edges.
